How we chose: This is a research roundup. We compared formulas, finishes, shade ranges and what buyers report after weeks of use. It isn't a hands-on test, and we'll say so in the post when we've tried something ourselves.

The best hyaluronic acid serum is a simple one: a thin, clear, fragrance-free liquid that you can put on damp skin and cover with a moisturizer. Most of the serums that fit that description work about the same, so what separates them is the texture, the extras in the bottle, and whether your skin likes them.
We compared seven of the most popular hyaluronic acid serums on Amazon by formula and by what buyers say about them.

How we picked
This is a research roundup, so we didn't test these serums ourselves. We read the ingredient lists, then looked at how buyers describe each one after a few weeks. We looked for patterns: tackiness, pilling under moisturizer, stinging, and whether people with dry skin said it helped or just sat there.
We left out serums with perfume high in the ingredient list, those that leaned on claims we couldn't back up, and any we couldn't confirm are sold on Amazon. That includes SkinCeuticals H.A. Intensifier. It's well known, but we couldn't confirm it's sold by an authorized seller on Amazon, so we skipped it.

How to choose a hyaluronic acid serum
Hyaluronic acid is a humectant, which means it pulls water toward the skin. It does not add oil, and it does not treat or reverse wrinkles. On a good day it makes skin look plumper and feel softer for a few hours. That's why the rule that matters most is to put it on damp skin and seal it with a moisturizer. Without that, it can leave skin feeling tight.
Look at the molecular weights. Lower-weight forms are smaller and sit a little deeper in the top layer of skin, while higher-weight forms stay on the surface and give that smooth, slightly filmy feel. Many serums combine several. You don't need to chase a particular number, and the label rarely gives enough detail to compare.
Check the extras. Panthenol (vitamin B5) is a common add-on to calm the skin. Ceramides support the skin barrier, so a serum that has them feels more like a light moisturizer. Niacinamide, glycerin and amino acids all show up too. If your skin is sensitive, a short list with no fragrance is a safer bet than a long one.
Texture is the biggest difference between brands. Oily skin tends to like thin, watery serums. Dry skin tends to prefer a gel with ceramides. For dry skin that still feels dry in winter, hyaluronic acid on its own isn't enough, so look at a thicker moisturizer too. If you also want a brightening step, our guide to the best vitamin C serums shows where that fits in the morning.
Questions people ask
When should I apply hyaluronic acid, morning or night?
Either, or both. It's gentle enough to use twice a day. Put it on after cleansing, while your skin is still damp, and follow with moisturizer.
Can you use hyaluronic acid with retinol or vitamin C?
Yes. Hyaluronic acid pairs with most things, and it's often used to cushion actives that can dry you out. Apply it first, as it's the thinner product, then your treatment or moisturizer. Our routine for your 40s shows one way to layer them.
Why does my skin feel tight after hyaluronic acid?
Usually because it went on dry skin, or because nothing sealed it in. Apply it to damp skin and cover it with a moisturizer straight away. In very dry air, a serum alone won't hold water.
Is hyaluronic acid good for oily skin?
Yes, it's often a good fit. It adds water without oil, so it suits oily and combination skin that feels dehydrated. A thin gel or liquid texture is usually the best choice.
Does hyaluronic acid cause breakouts?
It isn't known as a common trigger, but any serum can irritate someone. If you're breaking out and nothing seems to help, see a dermatologist.
